While many courses have two or three so-called signature holes that are worthy of brochure status, every hole at Black Lake Golf Club could easily be on the front cover of a magazine promoting the course. That is one reason that it was placed #44 in Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Public Courses in America” in May 2012 and placed #9 in the Best Value category.
The course is owned by the UAW, who selected one of golf’s most acclaimed course architects, Rees Jones, to design an environmentally responsible, championship caliber course. It was a challenge eagerly embraced by Jones, Golf World Magazine’s “Architect of the Year” in 1995.
“The holes were here, we just had to find them,” Jones said. “We strive for holes blending with the natural terrain. There is nothing artificial or contrived at Black Lake. We were trying to build an old-style, course,” Jones said. “You’ll notice we don’t have mounds or moguls. We just have sweeps and natural grades.”
The condition of the course is immaculate making your round more enjoyable, the only bad lie on the course comes with an errant shot that enters in the woods or the hazards.
Complementing the championship course is The Little Course, a nine-hole par 3 meant to introduce young people to the game as well as sharpen veteran players’ short games. In addition, Black Lake also presents an unrivaled practice area with a 350-yard double sided bentgrass tee range, four practice bunkers and four chipping and putting greens, a clubhouse with dining room and lounge, and men’s and women’s locker rooms.
Black Lake is open to the public and welcomes all guests as if they were members. The course is designed to provide a challenging experience for golfers at all levels of skill, with five or more sets of tee markers on nearly every hole, playing length from 5,058 to 7,030 yards.
Since opening in 2000, the UAW golf course has accumulated numerous awards. Black Lake Golf Club placed 34th in Golf Digest’s “100 Greatest Public Courses in America” 2009-2010 rankings and placed 9th in Best Value. The course was also named one of the Top 50 public golf courses for women in the country by Golf for Women magazine.
